What My Clients Asked For—And How I Supported Them
I started The Persistent Gardener almost a year ago and I’m so grateful to each and every one of my clients. It’s been a privilege to work with them.
These clients came to me feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or simply ready for a fresh start in their gardens. Many of them shared similar frustrations—and similar hopes.
Here’s what they were wishing for, and how I helped support them:
Greater confidence with plants
Several clients expressed insecurity and trepidation about caring for their gardens. They told me they wanted to “develop more fluency in working with plants” and said things like “I know very little about gardening.” Together, we built their knowledge and comfort so that plant care felt enjoyable instead of intimidating.
A garden that finally felt like theirs again
One client said, “I want to get my gardens back… they are overgrown and plants I didn’t plant are taking over.” I provided guidance so they could restore structure and intention to their garden beds. Another client was dismayed at the amount of weeds taking over and plants that were flopping. By offering solutions that felt manageable, they felt less overwhelmed every time they stepped outside.
Intentional container gardens
I worked with clients who wanted “a more thoughtful design in the pots or between pots rather than my usual random selection,” and “an organized and beautiful display of the potted plants.” After consultations they felt equipped to head to the nursery and create cohesive, eye-catching container arrangements.
Thriving herb gardens
For clients hoping to grow herbs, I offered suggestions for durable, aesthetically pleasing containers and appropriate placement so they could create abundant, accessible herb gardens perfect for snipping and cooking.
Multi-season color and continual blooms
Clients wished for “beautiful flowers that grow and thrive in our front yard,” including those that will bloom from early spring to late fall. I guided them towards native bulbs, shrubs and perennials that would keep their gardens full of interest year-round.
Easy-care gardens that didn’t feel overwhelming
As one client put it, “I have let my front yard go to crap and I am looking for easy. I can’t keep up with front and back.” We spent a day working in both areas together and came up with low-maintenance strategies that made gardening feel enjoyable again.
If your outdoor space needs a thoughtful refresh or you’re a garden newbie, I’m here to help you connect with the world outside your door (whether that’s a rural garden, suburban lawn, a balcony or a stoop). I’d be honored to add you to my list of clients.
